A romanian friend introduced me to this beautiful poem by Mihai Eminescu. (Here are two fragments, but i recommend you read the entire poem). The story is about the impossible love between immortal Evening Star and a beautiful mortal princess.

Iar ea vorbind cu el în somn,
Oftând din greu suspina:
– O, dulce-al noptii mele Domn,
De ce nu vii tu? Vina!

Cobori în jos, luceafar blând,
Alunecând pe-o raza,
Patrunde-n casa si în gând
Si viata-mi lumineaza!

She speaks with him in sleep and sighs
While her heart's swelled veins drum:
-'O sweet Lord of my fairy nights,
Why comest thou not? Come!

Descend to me, mild Evening-star
Thou canst glide on a beam,
Enter my dwelling and my mind
And over my life gleam!'
(Translation by Petre Grimm)

................

'O, cere-mi, Doamne, orice pret,
Dar da-mi o alta soarte,
Caci tu izvor esti de vieti
Si datator de moarte;

Reia-mi al nemuririi nimb
Si focul din privire,
Si pentru toate da-mi in schimb
O ora de iubire'...

'...Ask me, Lord, anything, but give
Me fate of different breath,
For you're the spring of lives to live,
And giver are of death;

Immortal nimbus overturn,
From eyes remove the fire,
But for all give me in return
One hour of desire' ...

I quite like that poem, brings a lot of story to the picture. The watercolouring is nice, i myself am still experimenting with that medium and damn, its different to use.. One critique though; the foot is too small, but otherwise.. keep up the good work!

:-) Cristina Marsi replies: "Small feet are my trademark, didnt you know? (Hehe, joking, it is just something I seem unable to change 10) Thank you for your comment, happy you like my artwork 2"

The leg doesn't look quite so small in colour. 2

As usual your use of watercolour is superb, and I enjoyed the poem, you have pictured the scene wonderfuly.

:-) Cristina Marsi replies: "It is a indeed a lovely poem, I'm happy you liked it 2"

Cristina, your artwork alone conveys a beauty and talent that touches the soul. But the poem is so beautiful, too, and I can see why it inspired you.

*sighs*

:-) Cristina Marsi replies: "Oh Fiona, I would never compare my amateurish artwork to such a great poem, but I'm happy I managed to illustrate it at least partly 2Thanks for your kind comment 2"

English will never do the poem justice.

Si cand in pat de-ntinde drept
Copila sa se culce,
I-atinge mainile pe piept,
I-nchide geana dulce;

Si din oglinda luminis
Pe trupu-i se revarsa,
Pe ochii mari, batand inchisi,
Pe fata ei intoarsa.

Ea il privea cu un suras,
El tremura-n oglinda,
Caci o urma adanc in vis
De suflet sa se prinda.

In my opinion, Eminescu, in this poem, wanted to talk about love .. a pure love that has nothing to do with LUST. Maybe the poem says something about the star touching her body (by the way .. he was touching her hands on her chest) .. but look at the last verse I wrote (Caci o urma adanc in vis/ De suflet sa se prinda) :"Beacuse he followed her in her dreams in order to touch her soul." => I think this is the proof that Hyperion(the evening star) had feelings for the girl and was in love with her soul .. not necessary her body. This poem shows what sacrifices can be made in order to fullfil the thirst for LOVE, and there are many secrets in this poem, secrets of a love that maybe could have passed all obsticles, but that ended up the wrong way.

"Ce-ti pasa tie chip de lut
Dac-oi fi eu ori altul?

Traind in cercul vostru stramt
Norocul va petrece,
Ci eu in lumea mea raman
Nemuritor si rece."

Read ther poem .. and see that this drawiong doesn't really fit the description.

:-) Cristina Marsi replies: "I'm sorry, I can't read romanian. I learnt about this poem through a romanian friend, but I read just the english version. Maybe i lost some of its meaning, as you point out, but what i painted is my interpretation of the poem. It wont be a critical essay on Eminescu's work, just a point of view, and of course one can agree with it or not, as is the case in most artworks 2"

But without the tiny foot this is one of the greatest pics i have ever seen!
